Review: Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2

Appearance

At first glance, the Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 hardly differs from a LTE router such as the Huawei B618 or Huawei B818. It is relatively compact and, thanks to the white plastic housing in the cuboid design, it is quite inconspicuous. Only a large 5G logo on the top reveals that it is a top modern 5G router.

On the back, there are two RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, one of which can also be used as a WAN port. This is useful, for example, if you want to use an existing cable or DSL modem. There is also a DC port and an RJ11 telephone port on the back.

Specifically, 5G super uplink technology complements the high and low frequency bands of TDD and FDD and integrates the time-frequency domain, making full use of their respective advantages and improving the uplink coverage of Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2. That is to say, 5G provides better signal coverage under the same conditions, and it can also bring speed improvement.

Wi-Fi 6+ Chipsest

Equipped with Wi-Fi 6+ chip, the speed of Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 increased by 150%. The theoretical speed of 5GHz Wi-Fi is 2402Mbps, and the theoretical speed of 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is 574Mbps.

Adopting patented magneto-electric dipole Wi-Fi antenna, it allows the signal to travel in all directions alike. Coverage area is increased by 30% compared to the previous version.
With the strong performance of Wi-Fi 6+ chip, Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 can connect up to 128 devices of various types. In addition, Wi-Fi6 supports MU-MIMO technology, which can support concurrent Internet access by multiple devices. Specifically, 5GHz Wi-Fi supports concurrent Internet access for 16 devices, and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi supports concurrent Internet access for 4 devices.

Silent Cooling Fan

In order to ensure the continuous operation of 5G services under high load and improve the heat dissipation effect, it uses a 30 dB silent fan for heat dissipation, and the fan speed can be dynamically adjusted according to temperature. The running sound of the silent fan is 30dB, which is 10dB lower than the ambient noise, and the running sound is hardly heard.

Configuration Settings

The Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 can either be configured via the Huawei AI Life app (Android and iOS) or via the WebGUI (IP: 192.168.8.1). Both the app and the WebGUI are visually appealing and easy to use. All important functionalities are available, including, for example, the network statistics on the Internet connection or information on the connected devices.

Basically, a little more functions are available via the web interface than via the app. For example, there are functions such as bridge mode or the option of routing the Internet connection via a VPN. More common functions such as guest WiFi can also be configured via the app.
